The CEO, Addie Sims, has always been passionate about art and wanted to share this passion with others. When her family and friends began asking Addie for the products that she simply created for fun her hobby quickly turned into a business.

he Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a ground-breaking program that takes students through the process of starting and running real businesses over the course of a full academic year.

Dr. Karen Rasmussen is the Chief Academic Strategist of the Innovation Institute and Assistant Provost at the University of West Florida. She leads initiatives related to distance learning, academic policy and infrastructure. Dr. Rasmussen leads MyCareerShines, the state of Florida career and readiness tool. As part of the Complete Florida initiative, Dr. Rasmussen works with academic affairs colleagues across the State of Florida to build systems for program completion and data integration. She has worked on the implementation of mobile learning program delivery in the areas of Performance Technology and Technology Systems Support. Dr. Rasmussen holds the rank of professor, teaching courses in Instructional Systems, Curriculum, Performance Technology, and Instructional Technology. Dr. Rasmussen has co-authored a text on web-based instruction and conducts research on the variables affecting learning in distance environments and persistence and success in program completion. Dr. Rasmussen has served as Department Chair and Associate Dean.

Youth Leadership Pensacola (LeaP) recognizes the important contribution young adults make in creating a strong, progressive community. Youth LeaP, a program for high school sophomores and juniors, encourages life-long responsible community participation. Through interaction and problem solving with peer and community leaders, students learn about current issues, community resources, and how they can influence the future of the Greater Pensacola area. Youth LeaP began in the 1988-89 school year as a project of LeaP Alumni. It is now guided by two volunteer chairs and a curriculum committee that consists of LeaP alumni. Chef Joe Abston, owner of Hopjacks Pizza Kitchen & Taproom and The Tin Cow, oversees the culinary direction of Pot Roast & Pinot and Edible Invaders. A Pensacola Tate High School graduate homegrown chef learned the right way. Chef Abston started his culinary training at PJC before graduating from the culinary elite Johnson and Wales University, building the foundation for his epicurean adventure.  Humbly Joe applied his education working around the world diversifying his culinary portfolio in such great places as the Ritz-Carlton and Le Bec Fin. Starting in 2008 Joe focused his energies in the downtown Pensacola area – a then small foodie scene. One of the earlier downtown revitalization pioneers, Joe was pivotal on the growth of the downtown area, and continues to further the downtown scene advocating for Gallery Night and chairing the up & coming Palafox Wine Walk. Chef Abston isn’t done yet with more exciting concepts early in the planning stages.

I have learned to manage multimillion dollar budgets as well and grow strong experience teams, do more with much less, and embrace change for moving into the future of a “new health care environment.” Building empowered and passionate team members/leaders shows to be one of my greatest strengths.  I have served under and been mentored by strong, committed, successful and well established leaders in healthcare/ hospice industry.

Covenant Hospice has been providing care for more than 30 years, serving as many as 6,000 patients each year throughout Northwest Florida and South Alabama. Our mission is to ensure our patients live as fully and comfortably as possible, without regard to their ability to pay. We fulfill this mission by providing specialized care for those with a life-limiting illness, offering hospice services wherever the patient considers ‘home.’

For patients who are unable to remain in their own homes, Covenant Hospice partners with more than 200 area nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Air Force brat from Atl. Went to the  University of Ky (go Blue) , Business owner in Atl,  Navarre/ Gulf Breeze area to raise my 3 kids the last 16 years and sell Real Estate.  A man came to my church 6 years ago to talk about GAL and I started volunteering.  I was so passionate about the program they offered me the Recruiting position 4 years ago.  Took me a long time to find my calling but incorporated my Passion for orphans and at risk children and my sales background to replicate myself to bring other advocates in.  

Guardian ad Litem standards were developed to inspire and empower volunteers and staff to say, “I am for the Child.”

“I am for the Child” is the theme for the GAL standards. I believe they reflect that we have listened to the children and young adults in foster care and that we heard their voices.

A Guardian ad Litem is so much more to a child than just their court advocate. A GAL volunteer often becomes a role model, mentor, educational surrogate, friend, confidant, and most important, a consistent caring person on whom the child can rely. The standards reflect this high level of empowerment and lay the foundation for guardians and staff to make an even greater difference in the lives of children.

“To the world you are one person, but to one person you are the world.”

As we approach 2015, our 35th anniversary, with the goal of more than 10,000 volunteers, I am looking forward to supporting our dedicated volunteers and staff who are there for the children and young adults not solely because it is their job, but because it’s their passion in life. This document is a living and evolving document with the sole purpose of allowing our volunteers and staff to advocate for a child’s best interest. I welcome your comments and thoughts to improve the standards.

Thanks for the important work each of you do for children. I value your commitment and dedication to ensure children’s voices are heard and children have someone in their corner fighting for them.

These standards will allow each of you to say unequivocally “I am for the child.”
