Kolleen Edwards Chesley / Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast

Kolleen Edwards Chesley has 25 years of experience in the financial services industry and spent the majority of her career as a financial advisor. In that role, Kolleen was responsible for finding her own clients and quickly learned the value of networking, networking, and even more networking. It was in 2004 and during her sales career that she, along with two other professional business women met for lunch with the purpose of helping to motivate each other after Hurricane Ivan had blown through our area and changed not only the physical landscape of the area, but also impacted the business landscape as well. Out of that lunch was born what is now a thriving not-for-profit organization for business women.

Kolleen currently serves full-time as the Founding Director of what was originally called Women’s Business Lunch and is now known as Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast. The organization advocates a culture of confidence building, lifelong learning, collaboration, empowering others and a spirit of charitable giving. The mission of Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast is to promote, advance and improve women in business and the organization accomplishes these in a number of different ways.

–             Monthly networking meetings in Pensacola and Gulf Breeze. These are open to all women and free to attend. We run a structured meeting with open networking, an educational segment, a sponsor presentation, an opportunity to hear about the businesses of all attendees, and a whole lot of fun. We frequently hear from attendees that these meeting are chock full of value and a great way to build new relationships to help support their businesses.

–             Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast Magazine. We are in our third year of production of the magazine and our goal is for this to be a quarterly publication. Each edition features interviewees of local successful leaders in business who share their honest thoughts on leadership, success, obstacles, and inspiration as it relates to women in business. We also include other articles on leadership, networking, and other skill development. It is geared for anyone in business or looking for business motivation and tips.

–             Annual Pursue Your Passion Women’s conference. To help celebrate National Business Women’s Week, we hold a full day conference during the third week of October along with several other events leading up to the conference. We feature a national keynote speaker, several local successful leaders in business, along with Speed Networking, an Experience Hall, structured and unstructured networking exercises and plenty of laughter, relationship building and excitement. Our attendees are not only motivated by the conference but they leave with tangible tips they can take back and implement in their businesses to lead them to success.

–             Power Up Challenge is a 12 week educational series where we hold classes once a week for an hour and a half focused around four main areas of business: Networking, Marketing, Business Efficiency, and Sales Skills. Open to men and women and all classmates (whether they attend in person or not) receive the full audio recording of each class along with class notes, expanded notes, and extra resources. Classes are affordable and attendees are elated with the amount and quality of the information that is shared.

–             Women in Leadership radio podcast show – sponsored by Pensacola Business Radio X. We hold shows twice a month and bring in mostly women but some men for in-depth interviews. Interviewees share their advice on topics such as mentoring, keys to success, time management tools, personal mantras and favorite inspirations, and what men can do to help support women in business.

Membership in Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast is also available. Contact kolleen@powerfulwomengulfcoast.com for more information or visit our website at powerfulwomengulfcoast.com or Facebook at Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast.

Jon Shell / Upward Intuition

In the spring of 2015, Upward Intuition was created with the purpose of facilitating positive change in Pensacola. The three-word phrase that we center our work upon is simple: Thoughts Create Reality.

Taking the time to assess the needs of our community, led us to the realization that there is a great need for a bridge between the young innovative people with great ideas, and the local leaders who have the ability to help effect change. Today’s youth are important; they are our future, and should be part of a vibrant and growing Pensacola. We strive to lead by example in an effort to inspire and empower them to live with a sense of purpose, and to show the value of giving back the community. Through youth-driven programs we provide opportunities for young people to make good decisions. They are encouraged to be innovators by identifying problems and crafting solutions, and we support their goals by offering them ways to become involved in projects with lasting significance.

Upward Intuition is committed to creating positive change in Pensacola and we greatly value the support of those who share our vision. With openness to new ideas, effective partnerships, and collaborations with community stakeholders, we are confident in our city’s future as we act today to make a difference.

After nearly two years of hard work, The Blake Doyle Community Park is ready to move forward! Upward Intuition will be responsible for design and construction and recently, in October 2016, the City of Pensacola formally agreed to assume responsibility for operations and maintenance once the park is completed.

With that critical approval by the City secured, we at Upward Intuition are now able to begin Phase I of the skatepark project: Fundraising for soft costs (design/development, engineering, surveying, geotechnical, and architectural). Our fundraising goal for Phase I is $100,000.

The core of the project will be an iconic, destination skatepark that will serve, among others, the ‘Forgotten Youth’ of our community, the non-traditional athletes. (i.e. skateboarders, BMXers, rollerbladers). This top-notch public facility will even be suitable for professional skateboarding events. However, with additional areas in the park focused on such elements as general health, early learning, art and music, there will be activities and amenities for people of all ages and interests, from children to seniors.

Meghan McCarthy / Baptist Health

Meghan McCarthy has a vision to turn Pensacola Blue. “We are almost the least healthy county in Florida,” she said. “At what point are we going to get angry.”

A Blue Zone is a place where people live a measurably longer, more healthy life. Cities that have gone Blue have experienced dramatic health changes as a result.

Meghan’s plan involves starts with a shared vision of what a healthier Pensacola looks and feels like, and having Blue “pockets” throughout our community. We are working with Meghan and Baptist Hospital to make the skatepark one of these pockets.

What makes the Blue Zones so healthy? There are many factors.  They are called the Power 9:

  1. Move Naturally- Don’t think marathons, think gardening and walking.
  2. Have a Purpose- It is the reason you wake up every day.
  3. Down Shift – This requires the ability to manage our stress.
  4. 80% Rule – Eat until you are 80% full.
  5. Plant Slant – Make plants the center of your diet.
  6. Wine at 5 – One serving of alcohol daily with food and friends.
  7. Belong – Being part of a faith-based community.
  8. Loved Ones First – Invest in family with time and love.
  9. Right Tribe – Have social circles that support healthy behaviors.

What they all center on is that our environment is very powerful. If the healthy choice is the easiest choice, we are accidently healthier.

Some people think that the major factor of how long you live is your genes, but research has shown that genes only account for 20%. The other 80% is lifestyle.

Ball Hawk

How the Golf Ball Hawk Came To Be

cropped-kevinKevin Hogan, the inventor of The Golf Ball Hawk, had a problem. He was always looking in his golf bag for his next ball, for he lost quite a few when he was learning to play. Or he was stuffing his pockets and unable to pull the next ball out without removing his glove. And you know the effect that a pocket full of golf balls can have on your swing! So he set out to solve his problem. For almost twenty years he contemplated the idea for having a dispenser that would mount to the top of your golf bag, making your golf balls easily accessible. He went through several designs, made drawings and produced prototypes. Finally, after his wife Judi said, “Now is your time to put this out there!” He made it happen. Selecting the simplest to use design and with the help of some strategic alliances, he finally produced a finished model of what a “real” ball hawk would look, feel and smell like!

Introducing “The Golf Ball Hawk”

double-shot-gb-backgroundWe would like to introduce you to our product “The Golf Ball Hawk”. It is a golf ball dispenser that clips to the top of your golf bag and allows you easy access to your golf balls. No more digging around in the bottom of your bag, or having your pockets stuffed with extra golf balls. Make your game more enjoyable. Use your energy to concentrate on that swing! It will become an indispensable tool that you just won’t want to go out on the course without.

How it works

green-on-bagThe Golf Ball Hawk is very simple to use. To begin, you simply clip it to the top of your golf bag. It is top loading and holds up to four balls, so pop open the top and load it up. To remove a ball from the Golf Ball Hawk you simply lift it slightly at the bottom of the tube and pull it towards you. Out it pops into your hand! You’re now ready to tee up and focus on your shot.

The UF/IFAS West Florida Research and Education Center (WFREC) is your local University of Florida campus in Milton and research facility in Jay. We are a part of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) which is a federal-state-county partnership dedicated to developing knowledge in agriculture, human and natural resources, and the life sciences, and enhancing and sustaining the quality of human life by making that information accessible. Our mission is to create and extend knowledge in agriculture and natural resources through teaching, research, and extension to improve the quality of life.

Our History

In 1946, the Experiment Station in Jay (on County Road 182 between Chumuckla and Allentown Crossroads) opened its doors for the purpose of agricultural research in areas relevant to local growers. The Experiment Station, now referred to as the Jay Research Facility, is still creating knowledge for distribution through UF/IFAS Extension efforts.

In 1995, the UF/IFAS West Florida Research and Education Center started offering teaching programs at the Milton Campus. These teaching programs include knowledge gained through the research at the Jay Research Facility. Our teaching programs allow students to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resource Conservation or Plant Science at the Milton Campus without having to relocate to Gainesville. These programs are possible through a partnership with Pensacola State College and other local area schools. To date, the West Florida Research and Education Center has graduated over 100 people.

Barb Wagner / dottera Oils

Would you like to learn how to begin down the path to wellness? I have dedicated myself to teaching people how to do just that.

I was introduced to essential oils in the summer of 2011. At that time, I had never heard of an essential oil. All I knew was that I had not slept through the night in years, and I was really tired of that.

A good friend sent me a little bottle of lavender essential oil and

suggested that I put a drop of it on the bottom of my feet before

going to bed. It seemed a little crazy, but I thought, “Why not?”

So I did as she suggested, and I was amazed to have one of the

most restful night’s sleep in years!!

I attended one of her classes and learned how the different oils could benefit me and support my body with the tools it needed to maintain optimal health. In the years since, I have become a great student of the oils. I attend national training sessions taught by some of the best scientists and experts on essential oils. I read all I can on them, but most importantly, I USE them everyday! Because I have seen so many benefits from using them, it has become my passion to tell others about them every chance I get.

So I am happy you have come to this website. Please go to the contact page so I can help you learn about using essential oils on your wellness journey!

2016-12-20-12-55-06

Quint Studer is a businessman, a visionary, an entrepreneur, a mentor to many, and extremely dedicated to his community. He has given his life to designing the building blocks for people and organizations that guide them to achieving and sustaining high performance.

Quint Studer is the founder of Studer Group®, a recipient of the 2010 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Studer Group is an outcomes firm that implements Evidence-Based LeadershipSM systems and practices to help organizations achieve, sustain, and accelerate in service, quality, finance, people, and growth.  For six consecutive years – the last three being in the top 10 – Studer Group has been named one of the Best Small and Medium Workplaces in the United States by Great Place to Work®.  Quint retired from Studer Group in March of 2016 to become a full-time community volunteer to undertake the development, training, and education of the Pensacola Metro Community.

Inc. magazine named Studer its Master of Business, making him the only healthcare leader to have ever won this prestigious award. A consummate teacher and student, Quint was part of the 21st Healthcare Leadership Curriculum Task Force at Harvard Business School. Quint has served as a Board Member at the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) and the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA). Quint has also served as a Think Tank Panelist in Washington D.C., as Faculty in Residence at George Washington University, and a Guest Professor at Cornell University. In 2014, Quint was recognized as one of the 40 smartest people in health care by Becker’s Magazine. In September of 2014, Quint was the first ever recipient of Modern Healthcare’s Healthcare Marketing Visionary Award.  He also currently serves on the Board of Sacred Heart Health System.

Studer has written and contributed to a number of books including his newest Healing Physician Burnout, released in September 2015.  His first book, Hardwiring Excellence, a Business Week bestseller, is one of the most read leadership books written for healthcare, with more than 700,000 copies in circulation today. Results that Last, written for non-healthcare, hit the Wall Street Journal’s bestseller list of business books.  Some of his other books include 101 Answers to Questions Leaders Ask, offering practical solutions to healthcare leaders; Straight A Leadership, helping organizations execute well in this changing external environment; and A Culture of High Performance, providing leadership skills to perform at a higher level—continuously.  One of his most popular books, The Great Employee Handbook, provides actions employees can take to better their work and life. Just prior to leaving Studer Group Quint released Maximize Performance for education leaders and teachers, to help them create a culture of educational excellence.

Quint and his wife Rishy moved to Pensacola in 1996 and have not been afraid to invest in its future.  They both have been given many awards through their years here in Pensacola.  Of all the awards, one of their most meaningful is the “Ethics Award” by the Gulf Breeze Rotary and the Pensacola Rotary.  Quint was awarded the Pensacola Area Commitment to Excellence (PACE) Award for Community Leader in 2005/2006 for having a ‘true spirit of service.’

They are co-owners of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos minor league baseball team based here in Pensacola, Florida. The team plays in the Southern League and are the Class Double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds Major League Baseball team. On January 19, 2015, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos announced that two-time Masters Champion Bubba Watson joined Quint and Rishy as co-owner of the team.  With this partnership, Bubba and the Studers hope to create even more memorable experiences for Wahoos fans, cultivate a great place for Wahoos employees to work and, with Bubba’s leadership, gain a more national and international awareness for the Blue Wahoos and the City of Pensacola, Florida.

Quint and Rishy founded the Studer Community Institute in February 2014, a non-profit organization that works with small businesses and sponsors research and development of benchmarks to help communities evaluate and understand the health of local economy, government, and quality of life. The Institute produces fact-based analysis of issues that need to be addressed to move forward.  The two main initiatives Studer Community Institute focus on improving early childhood brain development by creating America’s First Early Learning City, and training small businesses and entrepreneurs in universally recognized best practices and leadership development tools to help grow their business. Quint says he has a human responsibility to act and to do so with a sense of urgency. Quint will always connect his actions back to purpose.
