The University of West Florida recently honored more than 250 students at the 28th annual Student Leadership Awards Banquet, hosted by the Division of Student Affairs. Students were recognized for various achievements, including completing thousands of hours of community service, managing millions of dollars in funding and embracing leadership roles that benefit campus life.
The ceremony and dinner, held April 10 in the UWF Conference Center and Ballroom, featured alumnus and Pensacola City Council President Charles Bare as the keynote guest speaker. The division presented 14 awards, recognizing students for their leadership on campus, in the community and beyond. For a complete list of awards and recipients, see below.
Deborah L. Ford Emerging Leader Award
Dr. Rebecca Kennedy, assistant vice president of student affairs and director of UWF Counseling and Psychological Services, awarded sophomore Kishane Patel with the Deborah L. Ford Emerging Leader Award. Named for a former vice president for student affairs, the award is presented annually to a freshman or sophomore who demonstrates a genuine commitment to the University, specifically in the area of student life.
Patel serves as chief of staff for the Student Government Association’s president’s cabinet and as sponsorship chair for the Campus Activity Board. He also is an active member of UWF MEN. In 2016-17, Patel will serve as SGA Vice President.
Outstanding Student Leaders
Zimmern recognized junior Brandon Robinson with the Outstanding Student Leader Award, given to a junior or senior who demonstrates a collegiate record of leadership and service to the University and campus life.
Robinson serves as Senate president for the Student Government Association; president, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity; public relations chair, African American Student Association; and involvement navigator, Student Involvement.
Collectively, students in these organizations recorded more than 7,500 hours of community service in 2015. Six groups received the Bronze Award for 200-499 hours of service; five received the Silver Award for 500-999 hours; and two received the Gold Award for more than 1,000 hours. These organizations included eight chapters of the University’s Fraternity & Sorority Life community, the Kugelman Honors Program, and four academic- or interest-based student organizations. Students who completed 20 hours of service or more were recognized individually for their contributions.

Susan A Dawson / Reality Check Counseling

Life is neither fair nor easy. Numbing your feelings and emotions with alcohol, drugs, food, shopping, or any other addictive substance won’t make it any easier. It’s time you start living your life to your fullest potential. We can help. We offer individual, couples, family, and group counseling sessions.

You will be working with Licensed Counselors, Certified Addiction Professionals, State Registered Interns, as well as Master Level Interns in a safe, non-judgmental, confidential environment. We start the process with an in-depth personal history, various assessment screening inventories, and a treatment plan. Why is this necessary? While it is important to find answers to the cause(s) of your difficulties today, it is equally important to find the root cause of these difficulties to provide you with a clear understanding of your attitudes, believes, and actions.

How can you get back to your former functioning self – the self that gave your life purpose? By pinpointing the event(s) of your past that disrupted your life, healing it, and making you whole. And for those of you who are saying “I’ve never had purpose in my life” that’s okay. We understand and can help you find your “ah ha” moment.

Are you ready to get started? We are.

WHY

We believe Young Entrepreneurs are the future of our economy.  Pensacola Business Radio is absolutely committed to supporting these future leaders — and with just a little help from you, we can provide them with the same robust, full-scale “in-studio” Radio Show platform we make available to our Corporate clients, sponsors, and underwriters.

The Business RadioX ® Network has agreed to match Dollar for Dollar all funds raised from this campaign, provided . . .

  • We apply all funds to supporting Young Entrepreneurs in our community
  • We raise a minimum of $2,500 from our own community

What We Need & Want

  • What we WANT is $20,000 — which will fund Young Entrepreneur Radio for a full year.  To pull that off, we need to raise $10,000 (BRX Corporate will match that dollar for dollar to meet our $20k objective).
  • What we NEED is at least $2,500 so we qualify for the matching funds.

If we raise less than $2,500 . . . Every penny will still go to providing some version of Young Entrepreneur Radio.  It just means a much more modest program — like a monthly series vs. weekly show, and less budget for Remote Broadcasts, Radio Camp, Awards, and Scholarships.

Women In Technology – Guests: Jo Lynn Barnicoat / Clever Ogre, Lindsay Ryman / Greater Pensacola Chamber & Innovation Coast

As top-level leaders, the women (who will be part of this show) may not seem like the most representative sample – but we should view them as symbolic, and as part of the vanguard. For each one of them, there are legions of women in less-prominent and lower-level roles and organizations who are forging careers as women in technology. And most of them are doing so without degrees in computer science, without being coders, and without creating or working for tech start-ups. That’s not to say there isn’t still disparity in technology-related fields, roles and firms – or the need to do more to create opportunities for women, as well as better gender balance and equity – but the pursuit of those goals may be better served by a broader point of view.–September 30, 2014 Courtney Hunt

Jenny W Clark is founder and CEO of Solvability, Inc., a training organization dedicated to small businesses in the federal contracting industry.  Through webinars, podcasts, live “boot camps” and conferences, Jenny help small business learn the accounting side of federal contracting and shows them strategies to be more competitive and improve their cash flow.

Growing up in a Navy family, Jenny considers herself lucky to have grown up in the Pensacola area.  She is a Gulf Breeze High School graduate and returns to the Panhandle frequently to visit family.  Jenny has a BA in Economics and also a Masters in International Business Studies.  She’s worked in the aerospace and defense industry for over 30 years, specializing in accounting systems.

Jenny has stayed connected with the iTen area business community and sees lots of potential for growth in Florida, especially in IT, aviation, and unmanned vehicles.  She is also an advocate for veterans, especially for veterans who are transitioning from military to civilian careers.

Jenny currently lives and works in the Tampa Bay area.  She can be reached through her website at www.solvability.com or via e-mail at jwclark@solvability.com or through Linked in.

https://www.linkedin.com/in/solvabilityjwc

Founded in 1997, Solvability works exclusively with small businesses performing as either a prime contractor or subcontractor on federal contracts, focusing on DCAA Compliant accounting systems.

Growing companies need information about which systems to use, the costs of the software, implementation, training and maintenance.  Understanding your business structure, your plans for the future, the types of contracts and even agencies you are going after, and your reporting requirements are key to selecting the right financial accounting and reporting systems.

So where do you go for help?  The local PTAC can only really provide information about start-ups.  Your partners and competitors will only share some of their knowledge and strategy.  Large prime contractors don’t understand (and don’t care) that implementing an ERP system is expensive and time consuming, plus it takes more experienced accounting teams to run, and that your priority is passing a DCAA audit (since most small businesses are CAS-exempt.)

Before you can put in the right systems – you need the right people!  Finance and Accounting professionals who understand accounting, cost accounting and government contracting requirements, who become part of your key personnel and keep your books straight, but also know about indirect rate strategies, multipliers, billing, bidding, unallowables, unbilled and how to pass a DCAA Audit.

That is where Solvability comes in – your resource for selecting and  integrating the systems you need, while providing training for accounting, cost accounting and government contracting for you and your team.

Danny Mortimer and Joel Freeman / Card Payment Solutions, LLC

Danny Mortimer is an honest to goodness bona fide Panhandle local; born at the NAS Hospital and raised right here in Pensacola.  He has over 35 years’ experience coast-to-coast in outside sales, sales management, and business ownership.

In 1981 he was recruited into the life insurance industry and soon added to his portfolio a number of securities licenses with the SEC as well as certified financial advisor.  He grew his financial practice to well over 100 agents before transitioning into the wireless communication industry from 1998 – 2003 where as a broker he focused primarily on wireless solutions for businesses.

From 2003 – 2007 he was quite successful in the trade show industry.  As part owner of a company manufacturing portable modular tradeshow equipment and producing high resolution digital graphics, Danny set up distribution networks throughout the world but primarily in North America.  He grew this company well over 300% in just 3 years by developing solid reseller relationships with several of the largest franchise companies in the world such as Sign-A-Rama, FastSigns, Signs Now, and Allegra just to name a few.

In 2008 he came full circle back to the financial industry, this time in the bank card segment as a merchant processing broker.  His financial and sales management experience uniquely qualified him to help build a successful team for Card Payment Solutions along with his own residual portfolio of merchant clientele here locally and throughout the Southeast.

Danny was blessed to marry his Woodham High School sweetheart, Angela Bills. They currently call the Greenville area of South Carolina their home but can’t seem to stay away from the Panhandle.  A growing clientele and agent base here along with their family, kids, and grandchild keep them coming back at least every other month or so.
